Cycling: Rome’s great comeback for the final stage of Giro d’Italia 2023

Twenty-one stages and a quick stop in Switzerland, from May 6 to 28, 2023. After 3,448.6 km and a height difference of 51,300 metres, the winner will be celebrated at Fori Imperiali for the Giro d’Italia 106th edition.

Giro d’Italia 2023 edition no. 106 will be 21 stages. On Friday May 5, the official team presentation will be held in Pescara. The day after, the first pink jersey will be awarded at the end of the Grande Partenza, an individual chrono of 18.4 km along the amazing Costa dei Trabocchi, between Fossacesia Marina (Ch) and Ortona, in Abruzzo (it’s the second time, after 2001). This is one of the three time trials scheduled, along with the 9th and especially the 20th stages, a difficult 18.6 km race with a 7.5 km climb to Monte Lussari (Tv).

The competition will end on May 28 in Rome, after almost a month of exciting races, spread over 3,448.6 kilometres and 51,300 metres of height difference. It will be the fifth time Rome will host the finals cycling race organised by Rcs Sport/La Gazzetta dello Sport (the first in 1911, the last in 2018). Rcs and Roma Capitale’s agreement aims to initiating a regular appointment for the Giro, or at least until 2026. «The Rome arrival for the Giro d’Italia is like the Paris one for the Tour de France: it’s the natural end», said Rcs President Urbano Cairo.

The 21st stage will join some of the most famous sites in the Eternal City along 115 km. «We are developing a route showcasing the ‘Great Beauty‘ of Rome, from its suburbs to the city centre. It will be a widespread event, involving the entire population. We will dress neighbourhoods in pink and promote sport and two-wheels mobility» said Alessandro Onorato, Capitoline Councillor for Sport, Major Events, Fashion and Tourism.

According to agenda, race start will be in Ostia’s seafront area, then back towards the city centre via the Eur district. It will reach St. Peter’s via the Circus Maximus and the Spanish Steps, avoiding an urban circuit where too many obstacles are scattered along the streets. Bikers will find the finish banner in Via dei Fori Imperiali. Here the Trofeo Senza Fine winner will be crowned in the shade of the Colosseum.

Many expected athletes. Consider the outgoing Giro champion, Australian Jai Hindley, Slovenian Primoz Roglic or Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz or Colombian Egan Bernal (after his serious crash at 2022 beginning). Although everyone – especially because of the three time trials – is looking forward to the return of the World Champion and 2022 Vuelta winner Remco Evenepoel after two years.

The big no-show will be Vincenzo Nibali – aka the Shark – who won a Tour de France (2014), two Giro d’Italia (2013 and 2016) and a Vuelta (2010) and retired after the Giro di Lombardia 2022 last October. Like the Sicilian, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar and Dane Jonas Vingegaard will almost certainly not be there.

Sunday May 28, 2023 the 106th Giro d’Italia final. The finishing straight will be in Via dei Fori Imperiali, which is about 5km from AdaHome – Luxury Guest House Rome.

The place can be reached by car/taxi (in about 20 minutes) or by the following public transport (in just over 30 minutes):

• Bus 53 – Direction Mancini, from Liegi/Bellini stop to Tritone/Barberini stop, then Bus 85 – Direction Arco di Travertino to Fori Imperiali stop.
• Bus 3 – Direction Staz.ne Trastevere (FS), from Liegi/Bellini stop to V.Le Regina Margherita/Morgagni stop, then Metro B – Direction Laurentina, from Policlinico stop to Colosseo stop, then walk for 500 m (about 6 minutes).
