Golf’s elite for the first time in Rome: Europe vs Usa challenge for the 44th Ryder Cup edition is about to begin, 29 september-1 october 2023

Still several months ahead, but the hype about the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup, the third most-watched sporting event in the world after the Olympics and the World Cup, is already intensive. The huge golf challenge between Europe and the United States, which has taken place every two years since 1927, will be played for the first time in Italy, from 29 September to 1st October next year. A special occasion to spotlight the excellence of Italian golf.

Being able to host the Ryder Cup 2023 (the assignment was obtained at the end of 2015) is a great success for Italian golf. An epic win decreeing Italy’s official admission into the international golf elite, beating competition from countries with a solid golfing tradition such as Austria, Spain and Germany.

The competition will be played at the ‘Marco Simone Golf & Country Club’ in Guidonia Montecelio, near Rome. The club owned by the Biagiotti family will also host the Italian Open next May (exceptionally brought forward for the 2023 Ryder Cup). An incredible opportunity for the club, which will be at its best after a year and a half of restyling work on all 18 holes of the course. The project – led by European Golf Design in collaboration with architect Tom Fazio II – has enhanced the course, making it more challenging for players while enhancing the natural undulating ground. «The Golf Club has been completely redesigned with a view to eco-sustainability and design, to be enjoyed even after the victory» – as Gian Paolo Montali, general manager of the Ryder Cup 2023 project, said.

Applications for the tournament closed on 16 October 2022 and brought in candidates from 122 different countries, with significant interest also from Italy. The two Team Captains have recently been named: for Europe it will be Luke Donald from London, number one in the world ranking for 56 weeks. Leading the US line-up will be Zach Johnson, gold medallist at the 2007 Masters. No jackpot is up for grabs, only glory.

The Hertfordshire champion said he was «incredibly proud» to lead Team Europe. «Most of my best moments in golf have been in the Ryder Cup», Donald said. «Johnson and I play similarly and I am happy to challenge him. My goal is to have the best 12 players, and I would like a lot of Italians on team. I am happy that Guido Migliozzi recently won the French Open and also to have Edoardo Molinari as Vice-Captain (alongside Thomas Bjorn, ed.). Playing at home is very important, but we have a really strong rival, it will be a tough challenge».

Meanwhile, Johnson’s statements: «2023 will be our chance of a lifetime. We still have a year before we start but I am already very excited. As for Tiger Woods’ possible participation, I don’t know if he will be here next year, but he will be part of the team in some way».

The names of the 24 future players are yet to be decided. Among the most anticipated, the younger brother of Italy’s vice-captain, Francesco Molinari – who made Italian golf history by winning the 147th British Open on 22 July 2018 – and Tommy Fleetwood, with whom the Italian formed a spectacular duo at Le Golf National, in the 42nd Ryder Cup 2018 in Paris.

Regarding the arrangements, Franco Chimenti – the FIG President – reassures: «We are perfectly on schedule, in fact ahead of schedule, and the organisation is perfect, extraordinary». The club’s owner, Lavinia Biagiotti Cigna, adds: «Hosting the Ryder Cup 2023 for us is not just a dream come true, but the beginning of a new journey. ‘Playing the future’ (the club’s motto, ed.) means we are committed not only to enjoying world champions, but also to raising the golfers next generation and welcoming golf lovers from all over the world».

The setting for the 44th Ryder Cup will be the ‘Marco Simone Golf & Country Club‘, Via di Marco Simone, 84/88, 00012 Guidonia Montecelio (Rome).

The golf club was created in the late 1980s from fashion designer Laura Biagiotti’s idea to transform over 150 hectares of countryside into an extraordinary 27-hole golf course. The course was built around the medieval Castle of Marco Simone – the Biagiotti family’s current home – allowing spectators excellent views of the course and offering unique glimpses of St. Peter’s dome.
