Anyone who has walked down Via Tagliamento in the Trieste district will surely have been captivated by the striking buildings, adorned with frescoes and reliefs, that lead to one of Rome\u2019s most architecturally distinctive areas: the Copped\u00e8 District<\/strong>. This is not just a residential area in the city center, home to prestigious offices and embassies, but a true architectural gem<\/strong> in an eclectic style<\/strong>, where pagan figures stand alongside Masonic symbols, and animals and mythological creatures peek out from the facades, leaving visitors in awe.<\/p>\n

The Copped\u00e8 district, with its 18 buildings<\/strong> and 27 villas<\/strong>, built between 1915<\/strong> and 1927<\/strong>, is a remarkable showcase of various architectural styles: from Liberty to Neo-Gothic, from Baroque to Renaissance, with touches of Art Deco. It\u2019s an architectural universe<\/strong> like no other, where medieval turrets, grand arches, and richly decorated loggias almost seem to have come straight out of a fairy tale. But Copped\u00e8\u2019s genius wasn\u2019t limited to its lavish aesthetics. With modern innovations<\/strong> like garages, intercoms, indoor bathrooms, and central heating, these homes were ahead of their time, combining contemporary comfort with timeless beauty. Unfortunately, Gino Copped\u00e8 didn\u2019t live to see the completion of his work; it was his son-in-law, Paolo Emilio Andr\u00e8<\/strong>, who had been involved from the very beginning, who brought the project to its completion.<\/p>\n

It is believed that Copped\u00e8 enjoyed incorporating esoteric references<\/strong> into his buildings as a homage to ancient wisdom and the Masonic tradition<\/strong>, of which Ernesto Nathan, Grand Master of the Grand Orient of Italy, was a passionate advocate. A closer look at his work reveals eight-pointed stars, tridents, and floral patterns that symbolize the cycles of life and death, the balance between the masculine and the feminine, and the interplay of light and darkness. A powerful symbol of this duality can be found in the grand wrought-iron chandelier<\/strong> hanging from the Arch<\/strong> on Via Dora<\/strong> \u2013 a symbol of light, and thus knowledge. Originally designed to hold candles, which were lit and extinguished by caretakers through an ingenious system of ropes, the chandelier stands as a testament to the shift from the old to the new. The true revolution, however, came with the introduction of electricity \u2013 an innovation that Copped\u00e8 warmly welcomed.<\/p>\n

The eclecticism of the Florentine architect is immediately apparent in the Palazzo degli Ambasciatori<\/strong> (Palace of the Ambassadors). Here, symbols such as eagles call to mind Imperial Rome, while lilies evoke Renaissance Florence. You\u2019ll also find medieval masks and warriors, figures of lions, horse heads, and bees \u2014 each referencing Italy\u2019s noble families, like the Barberinis. The figures of Minerva, symbolizing wisdom, and the Winged Victory, representing liberty, add further layers of meaning. Religious references are also woven into the design, such as the niche featuring the Madonna and Child, symbolizing protection, and cherubs holding a coat of arms adorned with a rooster, a Masonic symbol of light. Together, these elements \u2014 read as a unified whole \u2014 carry a profound social significance<\/strong>, honoring Italy\u2019s grand history and celebrating the vision of a united nation.<\/p>\n

At the heart of the Copped\u00e8 district, Piazza Mincio<\/strong> stands as a symbolic showcase, with the Fountain of the Frogs<\/strong> drawing inspiration from the Fontana delle Tartarughe in Piazza Mattei and the renowned fountains by Bernini. Featuring twelve frogs among human figures, water displays, and shimmering reflections, the fountain’s design is rich in meaning. The number twelve evokes the Apostles, the zodiac signs, and the twelve weeks it takes for tadpoles to transform into frogs. These amphibians symbolize metamorphosis, renewal, and the connection between the earthly and the divine. The fountain\u2019s shape itself recalls the Holy Grail<\/strong> \u2014 the sacred vessel used by Jesus during the Last Supper, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.<\/p>\n

The side of the building facing Via Brenta is dedicated to Venice<\/strong>, adorned with the winged lion of St. Mark and the eagle of St. John. The third city is Rome<\/strong>, with the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus decorating a small balcony. On the Via Olona fa\u00e7ade, there is a representation of the Tree of Life and the Latin inscription Domino laetitia praebeo<\/em>, meaning \u201cI offer joy to the master [of the house]\u201d which can also be interpreted as \u201cI joyfully offer myself to the master\u201d, a phrase used in Masonic initiation rituals. On the portal of the aforementioned Palazzo degli Ambasciatori, a quote from Dante\u2019s Purgatorio stands out: Esser dien sempre li tuoi raggi duci<\/em>, meaning \u201cyour rays must always guide us\u201d, a reference to the Demiurge, the creator, the supreme inspiration.<\/p>\n

Further stimulating the curiosity of passersby is the imposing Palazzo senza nome<\/strong> (Nameless Palace). At its entrance, a large, lowered arch inspired by the portals of Gothic cathedrals is crowned by a colonnade. A plaque on the loggia of the first floor displays a Latin inscription: Ingredere has aedes quisquis es amicus eris hospitem sospito<\/em>, meaning \u201cEnter this place, whoever you are, you will be a friend, I protect the guest,\u201d a reference to one seeking initiation. Christian iconography is subverted on the vault of the hallway, where at the center is an image of a lamb, symbolizing the neophyte, the microcosm. Surrounding it are six eagles, representing the divine, the macrocosm, along with numerous small suns with inscribed triangles, symbolizing the state of enlightenment of the mason. The walls are adorned with seahorses, lions, and salamanders \u2014 creatures capable of withstanding the heat of fire. Above the doorway arch, another message, even more enigmatic than the previous one: Ospessalve<\/em>. The sequence of letters offers a dual interpretation, translatable as \u201cWelcome, guest\u201d on one hand, and \u201cFarewell, hope\u201d on the other.<\/p>\n

Ambiguity and mystery also pervade the Palazzina del Ragno<\/strong> (Spider House), named after the distinctive decoration above its entrance: a spiderweb with a large spider at its center. Even more puzzling is the monochrome decoration on the main facade: a horse topped by an anvil, flanked by two griffins, and crowned with ten bees \u2014 symbols that celebrate hard work, embodied in the word Labor<\/em>, meaning “effort.” These designs serve as a call to diligence and disciplined study, the pathways to achieving knowledge. This theme is reinforced by the inscription on the facade: Artis praecepta recentis maiorum exempla ostendo<\/em> (\u201cI show the examples of the ancients through the principles of modern art\u201d) which reflects Copped\u00e8\u2019s artistic philosophy in an era when the political agenda was pushing for industrial architecture, a style that rejected ornamentation and distanced itself from traditional craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

Gino Copped\u00e8’s original design also included plans for a school, consisting of a kindergarten, a primary school, and a secondary school. Today, the building houses the Liceo Scientifico Amedeo Avogadro<\/strong>, yet it still retains many of the original details envisioned by the architect. One of the most intriguing features is a mosaic depicting a rooster, dice, and a cup, each carrying a distinct symbolic meaning. The rooster, symbolizing light and awakening, represents youth and the promise of those beginning their journey into knowledge. The dice, marked with the prime numbers 1, 3, and 5, pay tribute to mathematical knowledge, while the cup celebrates the achievement\u2014the victory of those who pursue wisdom. But if we look deeper, an initiatory message<\/strong> comes to light: the dice, symbolizing the transition from raw to refined stone, introduce the principles of alchemy; the rooster, bearer of the light of knowledge, and the cup, invoking the Holy Grail, mark the pinnacle of spiritual transformation.
